Star River Electronics Keep Prices Unchanged for Scarce Parts

12/21/2020

As the No. 1 foundry, TSMC has the absolute voice to speak with its strong technology and production capacity, and its every movement will have a huge impact on the entire semiconductor industry.

According to latest news, TSMC has cancelled the discount for most of customers,  and will provide any discounts for wafer purchases in the near future!

In the past, for large customers who order large-scale wafers from TSMC, such as tens of thousands, they will have a discount of up to 3%, such as Qualcomm,  Apple, AMD, NVIDIA and other giants.

But the discount has gone now, regardless of the size of customers or how many wafers they purchase, they will need to pay the full price to TSMC.

Although there is no clear explanation for the specific reasons, the current industry situation can explain everything.

On the one hand, the demand for chips in various fields such as PC computers, game

consoles, TVs, smart phones, automobiles, etc. is increasing rapidly, resulting in

a serious imbalance of supply and demand. Therefore, it is not only TSMC, including

UMC and SMIC and other foundries have encountered unprecedented

demand, so they can naturally sit down and start their prices at any time, such as 300mm

wafers and 200mm wafers.

On the other hand, TSMC has no rivals in advanced technologies such as 7nm and 5nm. Samsung is also reluctant to compete. This has allowed TSMC to form a certain degree of monopoly, and how to price is also within its own mind.

The price increase of wafers will inevitably increase the cost of the corresponding chips, and the price increase of the final product is inevitable. It depends on how each company responds.

Furtunately,  Star River Electronics still have some stock (1-2 k for each part) for the scarce parts and keep the price we sold before, it could be be helpful for our regular customers.
